Music BC Charitable Foundation is proud to announce the very worthy recipients of our most recent Adopt an Instrument program grant.
Girls Rock Camp is a registered non-profit society and part of the North American alliance of Girls Rock Camps especially for girls ages 8-18 years old. The camps are unique in that they stress the importance of independence, pride and self-confidence for young women in a traditionally male-dominated genre. In their own words, they are
“…committed to building self-esteem and developing life skills in young women while cultivating a supportive community of peers and mentors.”
Along with Adopt an Instrument program partners Long & McQuade Musical Instruments, we supplied one full rock band set-up including guitars, bass, amps, drum set, keyboard, cases and accessories to this year’s Girls Rock Camp, which took place in July 2012 at the Urban Native Youth Association center. Every year Girls Rock Camp holds spaces in reserve for aboriginal youth to participate in the camps. Camp tuition is very reasonable, and provides an accessible, safe and positive space for girls to experience, experiment and learn about being part of a real rock ensemble.
Girls Rock Camp Vancouver also hosts a Ladies Rock Camp in the spring at the Waldorf Hotel, a ladies rock camp in a women’s correctional facility, a DTES Rock Camp and various rock-themed shows and workshops throughout the year.
